Uri Yakir

Uri Yakir has been a sculptor for 25 years, creating his works in the "Esh Foundry" in the Jerusalem Hills, known for its high quality casting.  In this foundry Christians, Jews and Moslems work together in peaceful cooperation.

Uri believes in peaceful coexistence. Over the years he has been active in organizing dialogues between Palestinians and Israelis. He has attended many classes in the philosophy of religions and has travelled extensively in the Far East.

Uri studied sculpture with well known Israeli sculptors – Yaakov Epstein at the Bezalel Academy, Amicam Dviyev at the Jerusalem Art Center, and Paul Taylor. Uri works with a variety of materials including bronze, stone, iron, plaster, cement, and mixed techniques. His sculptures vary in height from 30cm. to 4 metres.

He has shown his sculptures in group exhibitions: in the Jerusalem Municipal Gallery (1988-9), the Jerusalem Art Center Gallery (1990-1997), and in Paul Taylor's Gallery (1998-2000). In 2006 he had an exhibition of 15 sculptures at the Jerusalem House of Quality. In his works Uri has tried to discover the link between matter and the void, looking for the imaginary border line between positive and negative space. He has done this through hollowing out an inner space within the sculptures, which are themselves surrounded by an external space. Uri and his wife, Susan (originally from Cardiff) live in Jerusalem.

The sculpture “WOMB” is 30 cm high and has the facility to be constantly turned to a different position so the display possibilities are infinite.
