LIVING ROOM: John Carroll - Artist's Statement
This exhibition consists of a series of
studies of the 'living room' in my home. A place full of life
and layers of personal histories (the room my youngest daughter
was born in). I wanted to capture the ephemeral qualities of
this space.
When I first started on this body of work I was completely unaware
of just how much there was to see and investigate as I studied
the people and objects that inhabit and interact within the
space. It made me consider the varying light changes and profundity
of everyday things as a thousand momentary 'events' unfolded
before my eyes.
I use old paper, bills, notes, letters which integrate the layers
of past thoughts and actions. The image grows organically as
I glue and tear the paper until the composition is achieved.
Sometimes the work is a small aspect of the room, at other times
a panoramic view, it is the action of drawing which determines
all this.
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to my
partner Jacqueline and Gwyn & James at Troubadour for enabling
me to realise my dream of showing you this exhibition.
For my Dad: Pat Carroll 1927-2004
Thank you Dad for everything.
John.
